Rad Reading-March

This month I read Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch.

This book is about a girl named Carolina who goes to live with her dad, Howard, in Florence, Italy. Lina and her dad live on a World War II cemetery. She goes to parties and visits famous statues with her new friends. Her dad’s friend, Sonia, gives her a journal that belonged to her mom when she was pregnant with Lina. She goes on an adventure with her friend, Lorenzo, to figure out why she left Florence and Howard to live in Seattle with her mom.

There are many reasons why I think this book is good. One reason is the shocking twists and dramatic relationships Lina creates. For example, in the beginning Lina thinks living with Howard is only for a couple of months, but overtime she realizes how much she means to him and wonders what her mom was so afraid of all this time. Another reason why I like this book is because of how determined Lina is. When she builds up the courage to actually read the journal, she believes that her mom is hiding someone from her, so Lina invites Lorenzo on this crazy adventure to figure out who it is. One last reason why is because of how detailed her descriptions are. When Howard brings Lina to his favorite pizza place the description of the pizza makes my mouth water.

My favorite character from the book is Lina. Lina is my favorite because she is confident. One quote to prove she is confident is “I couldn’t let you beat me. It’s my competitive nature.” Lina’s faith in herself and her belief that she can accomplish anything she wants to is something I admire. She has been through a lot in her life, such as losing her mom, growing up without her dad, and losing her best friend. After everything she stays positive and perseveres.

My favorite quote from this book is ‘Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.’ This quote is meaningful to me because it reminds me that once something ends it doesn’t mean it will never come back. People often give up on things they aren’t hopeful about but when people keep their hope then there is a chance for a new beginning. There can be false hope but at least it is still hope.

My Dream Job

My dream job is a photographer. I want to be a photographer because I get to travel and visit historic places. Another reason why I want to be a photographer is because I am excellent at taking pictures, also because I would meet famous celebrity’s. For my last reason I would want to be a photographer is because I would be able to take my family on my trips and do my job while spending time with them. This is because some people don’t have time to spend with their family because of their job so being available to spend time with them and go on vacation is amazing. One additional reason I would want to be a photographer is because I would take pictures of exotic animals that are rarely seen making my work unique and valuable. This is why for my dream job I would want to be a photographer!

Rad Reading-February

This month I read Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart.

Imogen is a young women and a college dropout who lives in a hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She spends her days trying to make friends, tanning at the beach, and listening to K-pop. But it’s not Imogen who is staying in Cabo San Lucas making friends and listening to K-pop, it’s Jule, Imogens best friend pretending to be her. Imogen committed suicide and Jule decided to take over her identity. Before Imogen’s death she ran away from home to her mansion on Martha’s Vineyard she runs from her responsibilities and conflict. Her friends told her this wasn’t the way to solve problems or depression but Imogen didn’t care. Jule idolized Imogen she loved her like a sister and only wanted them to be together and happy. But soon Jule realizes that Imogen isn’t who everyone thinks she is.

This is a great book. You should read this book because of its surprising twist and complex ending. Jule is an easy character to like because of her kind gestures but she can be jealous from time to time. Imogen, on the other hand, is harder to understand because of her mood swings and confusing actions. Overall this book shows how much two people can react over the ‘other’s actions. It will surprise you what shocking situations Jule and Imogen get themselves stuck in!

My favorite character is Jule West-Williams because she is athletic and clever. One piece of evidence that proves she is clever is “Every place has rules. What you do when you come into a new place is, you figure them out.” This explains Jule is clever because she takes notice of her surroundings and adapts her behavior.

My favorite quote from this book is “Jule has become the kind of woman it would be a great mistake to underestimate.” This quote is meaningful to me because it is very inspirational. It shows how much Jule has evolved from being the lonely little girl that lost her parents and never recovered. It shows how she believed that she could become a better version of herself such as getting stronger and more independent. This is why this quote sticks out to me.

If I Was Invisible

I would love to be invisible for a day because of all the fun stuff I would do. First I would take my family to Disneyland. I would go there because last time I had so much fun and they would only have to pay for five tickets instead of six. The next thing that I would do is go to my friend Taylor’s house and all my other friends would be there too. They would be invisible also, and we would get some blankets and pillows and we would sleep in Taylor’s trampoline. It would be so fun sleeping under the stars and we wouldn’t get bug bites because they can’t see us. Finally, the last thing that I would do while I am invisible is go to Paris. Me and my family wouldn’t have to pay for the plain ticket because they couldn’t see us. We would visit all these restaurants and the Eiffel Tower. Once it becomes night time we would find a hotel and use one of the rooms that hasn’t been booked yet. We would do all these fun things for completely free! This is why I would love being invisible for the day!

My Abandoned Island

Life on my abandoned island was stressful… I was going to bed and I realized that I needed a drink of water. I walked downstairs in the dead of night the lights were all off, the fridge was humming with electricity. So I grabbed a cup and pressed the button for the water dispenser but there was no water coming out. So I opened the fridge “SPLASH” the fridge was full of water it drained out and everything was wet. But it just kept coming and coming suddenly I was drowning. Everything went black… I woke up. I could feel the course sand at my fingertips. I sat up the waves were crashing a foot below me. I was scared but I knew I had to do something other than sit and cry so I got to work. Keeping myself occupied with food resources and building a shelter. Who knows what’s out there. I stepped back to admire my work I had brought logs and built a base like a teepee then I placed palm leaves on the top for extra cover. It began to grow night that’s when I started a fire I had taken survival lessons in the fourth grade. I grabbed a rock and a coconut I had collected earlier and cracked it open. I grabbed a coconut I had gathered earlier and a rock. I slammed the rock against the coconut “BAM!” The coconut cracked open. I drank the water and chewed on the meat.”Scratch,Scratch” I heard rustling in the woods behind me I started singing to make myself not feel so lonely and scared. The noise just kept growing louder and louder…”BOINK” I felt a sharp pain in my side. I collapsed onto the sand I couldn’t see anything. Then I felt the sharp pain again I woke up. The sun was shining through the window I could hear the water fountain in the backyard. I looked to my side my dog was on my bed pawing at me to wake up. I was washed of relief it had only been a dream.

Rad Reading-January

This month I read a book called Family of Liars by E. Lockhart. This book is about a family who owns a private island in Massachusetts. Caroline Sinclair and her sisters Penelope, Rosemary, and Elizebeth live on this island with their mom Tipper Taft Sinclair and their father Harris Sinclair. Harris shares the island with his brother. His brother came to visit one summer and brought his children, Carries cousins. Carrie’s cousin Yardley Sinclair brought her boyfriend and his two other friends with them. The girls and boys fool around going on boat rides, playing tennis, and watching Marry Poppins. Carrie learns the truth about her family and has to keep secrets that will haunt them for decades.

I liked this book because it is full of plot twists, betrayal, and hideous family secrets. This book will leave you on your toes wondering what colorful actions lay on the next page. This novels has a few new characters from the sequel We Were Liars and astonishing secrets that will leave you wanting more. The details that go into every delicate page are enlightening.

My favorite character from this book is Rosemary Sinclair. A character trait that I think best describes Rosemary is accepting. One quote to prove that she is loving is “You look different—you look great—it’s kinda weird—but I’ll get used to it,” says Rosemary. This proves that Rosemary is loving because things change when you are young and you should live with it. She’s love Carrie and that is why Rosemary will embrace the change and still love her. Even though she didn’t grow up with this Carrie she still remembers the good times when she was younger.

My favorite quote from this book is “Be a credit to the family” by Harris Sinclair. This quote is my favorite because it is true. You should always be a credit to your family. You should always be loyal and have a good reputation when it comes to school or other academic activities. Helping out is an another great way to be creditworthy. Make your family proud of you, even when they don’t show it they mean it.

Short Story

My ninth birthday I got the best birthday present ever. I was bouncing in the bounce house with my family and friends when my mom yelled “CAKE!” Me, my friends, and my cousins all ran into the house. I sat down in the dining room and waited for the cake to arrive in front of me and to blow out my candles. “Happy Birthday To You” everyone started singing in synch. They started clapping when I blew out my candles. When we were preparing the cake for eating I look over at my stack of present. There was this one weirdly shaped one with a dome like structure. I got the biggest piece it was red velvet slice with a buttercream base and pink jelly writing that said Happy Birthday Mia! Next, it was time for presents we saved the best for last which was the strange looking one, I ripped the wrapping paper off. It tore my heart to be ripping such beautifully designed paper into shreds. Finally, I looked at the present it was a small cage with red bars at the top that lifted into an opening. I lifted the cage top and inside was a picture of a baby white and gray spotted rabbit. This could only mean one thing… I was getting a pet rabbit for my ninth birthday!

Dumbledore’s Words of Wisdom

This quote gives me hope. “ Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light.” -Dumbledore. This quote means a lot to me because it is true. People often forget about the light, the happiness that was once in their lives. Then someone comes and “turns on the light” gives the happiness once again. There will always be that spark of hope that everyone has because of that one person. For example, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows by JK Rowling Harry always has hope but that person who gives him hope is Dumbledore. Dumbledore has given many people hope not just Harry. This is why this quote means a lot to me.

My Hero

Somebody I look up to as my hero is my Dad. He is my hero because he helps me get better at sports and gives me tips and courage when trying something is new. He supports me with my tests and my grades and helps me study so I can do my very best. He teaches me life skills and lessons and says to never give up even when something is hard. My Dad also encourages me to work hard and try my best because that’s all I can do. My Dad does so much for me and I appreciate him very much and I love him. He has been such a great help with everything all my life. These reasons are why he is my hero and will always be.

Word of Intention

This year I am going to focus on the word helpful. When I am at home I normally get in the way of my mom when she is trying to cook dinner. So instead of standing around and watching her I am going to ask if she needs any help. Another reason is that I will try to be more helpful in class too. I will raise my hand and volunteer for things that Ms. Moffat needs help with. I will pick up trash around school and throw it away so then the custodian has less work to do. Along with that I will clean up after myself and clean my plate when I am done eating. These are things that I will work harder on being helpful!
